{"id":3836,"date":"2025-04-02T09:38:24","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T12:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bio.ufpr.br\/ppggenetica\/?page_id=3836"},"modified":"2025-05-19T11:52:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T14:52:38","slug":"english","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bio.ufpr.br\/ppggenetica\/english\/","title":{"rendered":"English"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">Postgraduate Program in Genetics<\/h1>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"#The_Program\">The Program<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"#Research\">Research<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"#Admission\">Admission<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"#Grant\">Grant<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"#Contact\">Contact<\/a><\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;height: 2px\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"The_Program\"><\/a>The Program<\/h2>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Presentation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To train quality human resources with solid training in Genetics, prioritizing<br \/>\nthe production of scientific knowledge by students, generating knowledge<br \/>\nappropriate to meet regional and national demands in the health,<br \/>\nagribusiness, environment and biotechnology sectors, generating basic and applied<br \/>\nscientific knowledge, innovations and educational technologies<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Objectives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2013 To produce innovative scientific knowledge, aiming to meet national<br \/>\ndemands for science and technology, capable of sustaining the social and economic<br \/>\ndevelopment of the country;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u2013 To train and qualify teachers and researchers, capable of promoting scientific<br \/>\ndevelopment, filling jobs in Universities and educational centers, and<br \/>\nleading the creation of new research centers at regional and national levels;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u2013 To generate quality products and services for the community, allowing<br \/>\nintegration between the academic environment and its surroundings, generating<br \/>\nspecialized educational tools and technologies that can be transferred to the<br \/>\nproduction chain and\/or health services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Graduates-profile<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The expected profile of PPG-GEN graduates is professionals qualified to<br \/>\nwork in undergraduate and graduate education, in academic and industrial<br \/>\nscientific research, meeting social demands in other sectors of society, such as<br \/>\nagribusiness, environmental preservation and human health. By vocation,<br \/>\nPPG-GEN has worked directly in the training of teachers for the basic education<br \/>\nnetwork and for this reason, many of the graduates have worked in this segment<br \/>\nof education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The program has continuously monitored its graduates and has an institutional tool<br \/>\n(Graduate Portal), a platform created using UFPR&#8217;s own technology.<br \/>\nThrough this, updated and auditable indicators collect data from public<br \/>\ndatabases, such as the Ministry of Labor and Economy, CAPES and CNPq, which has allowed<br \/>\nthe tracking of the jobs held by PPG-GEN graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">These indicators demonstrate the program&#8217;s leading role in establishing<br \/>\ncenters of excellence in research and teaching in the area of Genetics throughout<br \/>\nthe country, especially in the southern region of Brazil. Most graduates of<br \/>\nthe Program have pursued academic careers in public and private<br \/>\ninstitutions, in all segments of education (from basic to higher education). Others have<br \/>\nentered large companies, working in the areas of research and development<br \/>\n(R&amp;D) or in sales and technical support. In the short term, we have observed a<br \/>\ngood portion of graduates undertaking post-doctoral internships in<br \/>\nprestigious national and international institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Research\"><\/a>Research<\/h2>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Research Lines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The program focuses on Genetics and has five research lines:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Normal and pathological genetic diversity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Structural and functional study of genomic variants associated with complex<br \/>\nphenotypes, rare genetic conditions or therapeutic responses, capable of providing<br \/>\na better understanding of pathological conditions and treatment strategies. The<br \/>\naim is to recognize alterations in biomolecules that are potential biomarkers<br \/>\nfor new diagnostic strategies, disease classification and\/or therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Subjects:<br \/>\nAssociation of genetic polymorphisms with complex phenotypes;<br \/>\nidentification of rare genetic variants; mitochondrial variants; genetic epidemiology;<br \/>\nmonogenic (Mendelian) phenotypes; multifactorial (complex) phenotypes;<br \/>\nimmunogenetics; oncogenetics; biomarkers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Genetics and functional genomics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Combines molecular biology tools, functional assays and \u201comics\u201d approaches with<br \/>\nthe aim of identifying, understanding and validating genes and biological<br \/>\npathways involved in the regulation of gene expression and their implications<br \/>\nfor the metabolism of organisms. Its results allow us to recognize the<br \/>\ncontribution of genetic and epigenetic variations related to the functioning of genomes<br \/>\nand their cellular responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Subjects:<br \/>\nTranscriptome and proteome analyses, regulation of gene expression in<br \/>\neukaryotes and prokaryotes, extracellular RNAs, non-coding RNAs,<br \/>\nepigenetics; interspecific interaction genes; systems biology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">Genomic evolution and population genetics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Using traditional and \u201comics\u201d approaches, this study studies the evolutionary<br \/>\nprocesses and adaptive strategies of different organisms in search of a<br \/>\nbetter understanding of biological diversity in time and space. The results<br \/>\ncontribute to the description of neotropical biodiversity, the design of<br \/>\nstrategies for species conservation, the understanding of human evolution and the<br \/>\ndevelopment of forensic technologies that contribute to national sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Topics:<br \/>\nEvolution of genes and genomes, comparative genomics, comparative<br \/>\ncytogenetics and chromosome evolution, repetitive DNAs, phylogenetic systematics,<br \/>\nphylogeography, macro and microevolutionary processes, population<br \/>\ngenetics; conservation genetics; forensic genetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Environmental biotechnology and bioprospecting<\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Studies biological diversity with a focus on identifying genetic resources with<br \/>\npotential for prospecting bioactive compounds for use in agriculture,<br \/>\nindustry, renewable energy sources and in solving environmental problems. Apply<br \/>\nbioassays using animals and microorganisms as bioindicators in environmental<br \/>\nmonitoring. Conducts studies to identify the hazard and determine the risk of<br \/>\nchemical substances. This line of research also includes the development of new<br \/>\nalternative testing technologies to animal testing, which can be<br \/>\napplied in the product development process and thus contribute to product<br \/>\nsustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Topics:<br \/>\nBioprospecting; identification of genetic resources with<br \/>\nbiotechnological potential; environmental (eco)toxicology; assessment of genotoxicity<br \/>\nand DNA damage; environmental monitoring and risk assessment of substances and<br \/>\nproducts; identification of molecular markers for (eco)toxicity responses;<br \/>\ndevelopment of new methodologies as alternatives to the use of animal<br \/>\nexperimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Scientific education<\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It seeks to promote the diagnosis of teaching difficulties, development and<br \/>\nevaluation of educational resources (didactic, computational and dissemination<br \/>\nstrategies) that are capable of making Science more interesting and related to<br \/>\nsociety.
